Blood-splattered and crying, thousands of people staggered into the streets of London in the morning peak hour after at least four blasts rocked the heart of the city.
A shaken Prime Minister Tony Blair said it was a barbaric terror attack while security experts pointed the finger at al-Qaeda.
Amid the chaos, officials initially said at least two people were killed and as many as 300 injured. There was no confirmed official death toll.
But there were unconfirmed reports of many more dead. CNN quoted sources as saying the toll was 12 deaths.
Hospitals reported at least 150 people were seriously wounded after the blasts affected six tube stations and blew off the top of one double decker bus.
The crisis erupted when emergency services rushed to the Aldgate East underground station where police reported the first blast incident at 8.59am local time.
The terror and tragedy on London's underground and bus routes replaced the excitement that erupted across the capital the previous day after it was named the host of the 2012 Olympic Games.
Police found traces of explosives at some of the blast sites.
Blair said the attacks were carried out by terrorists to coincide with the Group of Eight summit underway in Gleneagles, Scotland.
He described the blasts as “barbaric”.
“There are people who have died and people who are injured,” he said, adding that it was clear the attacks had been carried out to coincide with the summit.
US President George W Bush and other G8 leaders swung behind Blair who was forced to leave the Gleneagles meeting that he had been hosting.
“The war on terror goes on,” Bush said.
Queen Elizabeth said she was “deeply shocked”.
An Arabic-language news Website reported a group calling itself “Secret Organisation – al-Qaeda in Europe” has posted a claim of responsibility for the blasts on a website popular with Islamic
militants, which it did not name.
It said the group claimed the explosions were in retaliation for Britain's involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. It also warned of more attacks in other countries.
Ambulances and fire engines rushed to the scene of the blasts at underground stations and on a bus in the middle of the morning rush hour that left thousands of people dazed and confused.
The sound of sirens filled the air as emergency staff rushed people, some suffering terrible lacerations and burns, to nearby hospitals.
BBC TV broadcast footage of a paramedic trying to revive one of the wounded, pumping the chest of his bloodied and blackened body.
Police said at least two had been killed, while Home Secretary Charles Clarke spoke of many “serious injuries” following the co-ordinated terrorist strike.
CNN claimed that at least 10 people had been killed at King's Cross station. Police said two people were killed at Algate East station.
“There was a loud bang and the train ground to a halt. People started panicking, screaming and crying as smoke came into the carriage,” said Arash Kazerouni, 22, who had been travelling from
Liverpool Street, one of six stations in and around central London that was targeted in the blasts.
“A man told everyone to be calm and we were led to safety along the track.”
The entire London underground network was suspended and stations evacuated including one in Stratford, which will be a key transport link for the site of the Olympic Games.
“The area is solid with people and I have seen many commuters with blackened faces just walking around looking stunned,” said commuter Gerard Bithell.
His overground train was diverted from Moorgate to King's Cross because the station was closed.
Commuters, visibly shaken and some covered in black soot, emerged from train stations, recounting tales of horror when blasts shook their trains.
“There was a fire beside me. I saw flames outside on the window of my carriage,” a witness said.
She said tearfully that as she was led away down the tracks, “I saw bodies. I think some people may have died,” said Sarah Reid.
An office worker from a nearby building that had been evacuated described how the whole building shuddered.
A police officer at the scene said: “I was first on the scene at the explosion at Aldgate all of which has now been evacuated. I was pulling people out of the bus. There are definitely some dead.”
Police later confirmed that two people had been killed in the Aldgate blast, while many more were injured.
The attacks also paralysed all of London's bus routes after an explosion tore the roof off a double decker bus near Russell Square.
“The explosion seemed to be at the back of the bus. The roof flew off and went up about 10 metres. It then floated back down,” said eye witness Raj Mattoo, 35.
“I shouted at the passengers to get off the bus. They went into Tavistock Park nearby,” he said.
“There were obviously people badly injured. A parking attendant said he thought a piece of human flesh had landed on his arm.”
The explosion the Tavistock Hotel, where people fled to escape the mayhem.
“One man was being carried by other passengers. We just did not know what had happened,” said receptionist Sam Elliott.
City council officials advised children to remain at school after the attacks and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said people should remain where they were.
