Peace to all,
Hi!
Just thought I'd put my two cents worth of thoughts here and after reading nearly all the posts here… my I must say that I am impress by all your writings! Comparing to you all who have had experience in writing and drawing I feel so small (kecik orang utara cakap!) and I just want to share from my experience about writing.
Character Development.
I feel strongly about this topic as it would shape the story line more 'lively'. Many characters I have develop, I write them on small cards which I call then Character Cards or CC for short. However, the content of CC would be up to the creator themselves, there is no fixed foemat on how this CC looks like. Up to the creator as long dia faham dia punya character that is well enough to keep the story in line. (trying badly to write in Bahasa Malaysia  )
Yes, yes… I do have some CC lying around. Doing this CC you musti rajin you know-one! 😆 if not aaa… don't do CC, nanti you will feel like you wasted time. As for me I feel strongly about CC.
Lastly, forgive my spelling, because when you type fast, several letters you are sure to miss

Yeah, i'm thinking of doing CC too…
I usually write my characters' profile whenever i'm bored… re-wrote them when i get bored again… =__=
But how big is ur CC anyway? There'll be a lot of info on your characters right?
you are welcomed to contribute, vonadler.
ideas ideas ideas…all floating around, and can fly away…
CC is one way of catching them.. :sengih:
thanks.
Welcome aboard, it's my pleasure if you could share some of your ideas here. Do enjoy yourself.
u know, CCs are not the only method in constructing ur writing. ofcourse, having CCs are good, especially after one of those nights where u cant sleep and ideas are pouring in. do remember one very important thing about ur character(s): they must have a story.
in order to write a good story, u must have a good ending. a good, immersive story is when readers could relate to ur character immediately from the start, and how the characteristics of the character actually contribute to the story. that's why i love daredevil so much.
u've got a character which is all too powerful, and u'll end up with another neverending raja laut story. and readers will immediately disconnect from ur characters, and all they will appreciate is the beautiful pictures only (assuming u're talking about writing comics, that is).
here's one easy approach that u can try. i'm currently writing the matrigal story, and tidying up the pieces before engaging on the long and tideous task of drawing 96 pages of them.
i. write the story first before u sign in the characters. this way, u'll fit the characters right in the middle of the story, and they'll connect. sometimes u've got a good set of characters, but u cant tie them to any story line.
ii. design the character to fit the stories, not the other way around.
iii. focus on the objective. will the character play a part in the ending? or are they just a bunch of people who just happened to be there at the ending? avoid the latter.
iv. avoid expanding ur story to fit other characters that u dont really need. this is a waste of time. a character is there because it needs to be there, not because u want them to.
v. a story moves on its own, self sustainable, it doesnt need u. if u can imagine this situation, then u're on ur way into a good, expandable story that could just in in 4 pages, or goes on to become a hollywood movie.
Azarimy>> wow, thanks for the tips!
Actually, aku sendiri tak sure camane aku plot kan citer aku. =.=
Peace to all,
Wow! So many very good advices here! I will encode them in my very sequential mind so that I can be a better writer! Thank a lot I really appreciate all these advices…
Vulpine Ninja,
My CC's are very small only the library cataloging cards was enough to put in all the necessary information about the character. Additional information will be added on another card that stapled together so that they are of the same category.
azarimy,
Thank you for such a valuable information, I will treasure them and apply them in my next story. Wow! For the first time, I am being commented at, and I find this very constructive, Thank you all once again.
FYI, I've addended the Bengkel Storyboard & Hakcipta komik Malaysia last Saturday at Taman Permata Ulu Kelang and I was hoping that some of the members were there, if you were please identify yourself to me by e-mailing me here at Pergh! so that I can communicate better to you all and share my two cents worth…
FYI2, I know azharmaa, he is sitting about two tables away from my table at my workplace, you see he and I are in the same office! Brrrr… very cold suddently 😆
I think azarimy is Kromosom? uh? Just guessing If worng sorry-eh…

azarimy=kromosom?
pergh! brilliant!
haha… mana ko dapat conclusion tu? haha. taklah. azarimy & kromosom adalah 2 orang yg berlainan! seriously haha. kromosom punya skill is more to wacom, sedangkan aku cenderung ke arah pensel. kromosom adalah artis urban comics, sekapal dengan azhar, adijin dan lain2. aku freelancer je haha.
tapi kitorang punya base sama laa. kromosom, aku, azhar, white dan beberapa orang kat pergh like bohrtaag, mafia dan lain2 semua graduate architects. (mafia ko dah grad ke? )
anyway, kromosom dan azhar have more experience in comic productions: writing, thumbnailing, storyboards, drawings, compositing dan sebagainya. aku takde proper training. just read, and read, and read, and later analyze kerja orang lain and belajar sendiri. u should refer to them more!
Peace to you,
azarimy=kromosom?

haha… mana ko dapat conclusion tu?
Opps! Looks like I was right! er…er… I mean that I was right in guessing wrong!!!! So very sorry! I must have mis-heard (banging head against the nearest wall)
FYI, I treat all of you here (including yourself) as Masters in your own field. Story telling will always be in my blood, only that I am lacking yet another element in the comic environment: drawing!!! my poorest asset that I have. So I will salute (standing up with a bleeding head!) you and apologize once again for such a grave mistake in associating you with aother.
Very sorry (make face like the Puss-in-Boots from Shrek2) (salute once)
Now I shall continue with my mis-heard punishment (begins to bang head against the nearest wall again)

Although this session had many gory scenes, no human was mortally injured in the making of this session. All action were coordinated by a trained professional. :sengih:
Kids! Do not try at home…

I see…
Cos i've been wondering how you do it..
I wantto do mine as well… but i haven't even started.. =__=;;
I believe having a cc or anything of sorts is a very good and helpful.
I myself have a little notebook that i use to write everything at anytime (even in toilets)…believe me…brilliant ideas comes at weird places. When least aspected a flash of brilliance comes and u want to capture every bit of it….shouldnt be a wasted when u got your scrap book. Thats why…..everywhere i go…i bring it a long with me…even (especially) to work. Now i have a couple of them….for every story or title that i work on.
What i do is everytime i've thought of something even you think it just a small-small kind of things….i just write it down. Up till now i've wrote a lot of things or ideas that i could use….i even drew maps or route to help me develop my story. And costumes ideas that i csught a glimpse of from the tv and a whole lot more.
If u serious about writing a story…having a small scrapbook really helps!!!!!
Peace to you,
Very good advice, yes ideas DO come at weird and most unexpected places and a note book would come very handy. I remembered one time I was in the LRT going to Pasar Seni when I got an idea for my current story but had nothing to jot down, I ended my trip to Pasar Seni and got down at KL Sentral, ran to the nearest McDonald, ask them for a papar napkin and wrote the idea down!!!! It was so sian :pergh: (Hokkein for 'so gila') and I vowed never to go out empty handed. Now a days I always have some library catalog cards handy…
Dulu I used to have a sketch book. Very handy this sketch book, not only I could draw and write but also can protect me from the light rain that we sometimes cannot avoid!!! 😆
Then at college, someone 'kebas' my sketch book. Cried until my eyes bled also no use. It has all my collection of stories, character decsription, possible environments, political standings, military weapons systems description, in other words my life work!!! WaaaaHHHH!!!! until today I still cry thingking about it.
To overcome that type of problem, I switch to library catalog cards (I call them Character Cards or CC for short) and carry a few (about 15 – 20) cards at a time. When I get home, I reassign them according to category…
Another advantage Ifound out is that by using CC, you could create cross-overs between stories!! I've tested it several times and manage to generate new ides (sometimes I DO get writer's block and that is when I turn my room upside down… 😆 )
So having CC is a good thing. you can obtain these library catalog cards at any mamak stationary shops. More to come on the content of CC.

Peace to all,
Nearly forgot to tell how the CC idea came about, well…
In 1985, I was working at a one of the fast food at Bukit Bintang and I started using small notebook for as my calculation of my over time, and this became a habit. After calculation for overtime, the notebook became a user manual duringmy work time. This went on so much so that when I started teaching, I still use the notebook method to write down student's reaction on my lectures.
People thought me weird. Then I met another person who encourages people to use note books during work time. This is none other than En. Hassan Muthalib. Looking back I think we were the only two lecturers using note books for observation, note taking and idea generation.
Of course I did not follow anybody about this note book thingy. I thought it was right. Then the library cataloging cards came to mind as I begin to write short stories…
Ta Dah! :sengih:

so have u already got something to show?
cepatlaa scan dan letak kat sini…
Peace to you,
About the work, well… it will have to wait until Taiko finishes the sketches based on the description that he gotten from me, then with his permission, I will place them here…

1985… i wasn't even born
can't wait to see them

Peace to all,
Actually, having CC is just one of many ways to keep track for characters in a story. A student once asked me about how do I go about creating sci-fi shorts… (this happen a long time ago in a country far, far away…
To reply to this enquiry rather than a question, er… entah, I believe that every story teller has his/her style of telling story… mine goes something like this…
First, I create the objective of the story… a journey, sebagai contohnya… or mungkin satu peperangan antara dua alam semesta where one alam semesta is facing a political crisis ke macam mana ke… then…
I prepare appropriate characters for the objectives. First siapa dia yang protagonist? Kena buat dia ni betul-betul, maklum le… the good guy always win… right? Naw! :p2 that is subjective to the plot of the main story….aaa… then the bad guy pulak, sebab where would be the good guy if there is no bad guy to do battle? Battle ni pulak can be in many macam-macam way, ada battle secara physical, secara wits atau secara in direct ( pakai pyhco… pun ada)
Now comes the story…
Every story has a Begining, Middle, and an Ending (or so they say…)
What they don't say is the plot/s in the Begining, the plot/s in the middoe and the plot/s in the Ending 😆 itu adalah something all story tellers have to endure…
My style is that I put myself 'in character', meaning that I play the part, tak kisah samada I bad or good guy, I play the part saja (ini yang buat kadang-kadang anak I lari kat mak dia shouting, 'Mak! Ayah naik minyak lagi!!') Moo!
all this I write in bits and pieces that I arrange them macam jigsaw, which one goes first. Sometimes sketches would replace text, tak apa asalkan the artist dapat idea tu that is important…
Habis arranging, maka tersedia-lah satu storyline untuk satu short. Usually it would take about 2 to 3 weeks to come up with one short. (masa tu okay lagi, tak le sesibuk macam sekarang!!!!)
anyway, if you all ada method lain yang nak di'share'kan, more than welcome to place them here. :sengih:

Ah, Von! I finished reading your 2000AD: The Tracker story and I think its pretty good and you really should try selling it to 2kAD.
Its has everything a geek needs:
Machismo, drama, grimy streets and seedy bars… in space. A protagonist with a cavalier attitude as he bares all hell in a sprawling space opera.
All it needs is heavy duty MANLY art. Like, like Turok! Follow the link and scroll down. Yeah, look at that cover! Bare chested, choking some alien scum with some weird monster at the back. Truly what comics are all about man!
http://daveslongbox.blogspot.com/2006_04_0…ox_archive.html
Seriously, just publish it. It may lead up to your character teaming up with Judge Dredd once more! But make doubly sure you check the plot threads again. Some scenes won't need decompression.
Aaaand, we'll talk some more later about the spinoff story for Satria Alam when you're ready.
Peace to you,
Norman,
WOW! the link you gave me to look at talks about serious implications of marvel, Azhar should read this blog too…
Looking back, Revolution comics did mentioned that they are not intrested to publish The Tracker as it would go against their company policy (or to the sound of something like that!) Anyway, I would like to finish the Tracker and see where it takes me, after all there are plans to do another Judge Dread movie…
BTW, the maps of Satria Alam is coming on fine, will scan it to be mailed to you real soon…
