Hard as Rock

THE carefree days of being young, listening to rock ’n’ roll music and playing in a rock band is what the latest local, Malay-language film Rock is all about and more.
The film, which opens in cinemas on Dec 8, revisits the 1980s, when the pop culture scene in Malaysia experienced an explosion of rock music with the emergence of local rock bands such as Search, Wings and Bumiputra Rockers (BPR) as well as from overseas with such bands as Whitesnake, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard and Iron Maiden among others.
The influence of rock music also spawned the fashion that went along with it – tight pants, long hair and mascara – and was the craze among the fans. Hence, director Mamat Khalid takes you back in time to a special period in the 1980s where kids looked up to the rock stars and hoped to make it big, just like their idols.
Rock, however, has many facets to its story. On one side is the story of Zack played by Hasnol Rahmat, a postal worker with a dead-end job who happens upon a letter addressed to him and starts reminiscing about his past when he grew up in a village and was the guitarist for his band Rimba Bara.
Then, there is the story of the band Rimba Bara, a four-piece glam rock outfit consisting of vocalist Amy (Q. Haidar), Jijo (Khir Rahman), drummer Black (Azmi Baharom) and the protagonist, Zack, who want nothing more than to conquer the world with their brand of rock ’n’ roll.
The band’s journey to stardom is a hard road with a lot of laughs and heartaches. The leader of the band is bass player Jijo, who is focused and serious about being a musician while Zack is easily distracted by the fairer sex. But when it comes time to prove their worth in a battle of the band competition, especially since their archrival – a metal band called Malaikat Maut – is also taking part, Rimba Bara pull out all the stops to make sure they come out on top.
In order to flesh out the film with all its different layers, director Mamat relied on actors, as opposed to stars, for his cast.
Mamat picked Khir for example, a local theatre stalwart and the son of musician Datuk A. Rahman Hassan, as Rimba Bara’s ambitious bandleader and bass player.
“I was a last minute addition to the cast because I got a call from Mamat just one or two weeks before we started shooting,” said the 32-year-old who started acting at the age of 18.
Khir, who grew up in the 1980s and is a fan of rock music, identified with what the film was about and his character, Jijo.
“You have to have discipline as an actor in order for the performance to work. I grew up in the 1980s and being a rock fan myself, it was not difficult understanding where my character was coming from.
“You know, Jijo is a kampung boy who wants to realise his dream to be in a rock band.
“So I went back and listened to the music to get a feel of the performance and I tuned myself to be a bassist, to think like one and to find what is the attitude of a bass player,” said Khir, who has appeared in such films as Puteri Gunung Ledang and Potret Mistik, and will be appearing in the upcoming Yasmin Ahmad film, Gubra.
Another actor handpicked by director Mamat is film and theatre actor Shoffi Jikan, who plays Zul Kapan, the terrifying frontman for metal band, Malaikat Maut and rival to Rimba Bara.
“I’m a naturally expressive person but when it comes to playing a character, I get energetic in order to flesh out the performance and the emotions,” said Shoffi who has been acting professionally for the last 10 years and has appeared in such films as Bukak Api, Paloh, Lang Buana and will be seen with Khir in the upcoming film, Bilut.
In order to pull off the role as the hard as nails frontman Zul Kapan, Shoffi just hung out with local metal band XPDC, who are friends of his.
“I know the guys from XPDC, so I spent time with them to see how they function as people and as a metal band,” said Shoffi.
“The scene during the battle of the bands where Malaikat Maut performs, that was live, we played that track live while we were shooting to give the audience a feel of a live show.”
Director Mamat also surrounded himself with other familiar actors such as Jaafar Onn, Loloq, Nasir Jani, Rashidi Ishak and Julie Dahlan with special appearances by popular rockers Amy Search, Black Wings and Man Kidal.
And if that’s not enough to get you to see Rock, Khir gives his own reasons to watch the film – “You have the rock culture of the 1980s, a great soundtrack featuring songs from Sweet Charity, Wings, Lefthanded, and Search. We have three generations of actors, special guests like Amy Search and Man Kidal and an exceptional story by Mamat Khalid.”
Rock opens in local cinemas on Dec 8.

Tumpang tanyer, adakah memang aku ataupun memang die punye trailer/promo kat tv x best langsung?
Macam x der yg menarik minat utk menonton jer…mcm mengharapkan penonton yg kt luar sana kenal sape pengarah die n citer yg dia direct mesti sedap. Die punye target utk org2 lame ker or bebudak zaman skarang skali?
Sori la kalau komen aku mcm mengutuk cuma hampa+ x interested dgn die punye promo. Stakat cakap sipnosis cite then short clip drpd movie jer….

Tapi yg aku pnah tgk pun x penah ade yg tunjuk klip waktu diorang buat battle of the band ker, scene2 yg tense mase movie tu ke.
Klip yg aku ingat, klip yg ade ckp 'rocku' (correct me if i'm wrong) waktu last, then clip sorang mamat rock tu keje kt gerai abc ye? Then yg ade diorang menyanyi kt trek keretapi….
Tapi apepun still, for me, rase mcm x cukup 'garam' lg la. Don't get me wrong ye? Aku bukan nk kondem cite die. Cume kondem die punye promo kt tv je… Aku dengar reviu kat Era kata best… ingat nak pi tengok…

kan time tu proses dubbing sll sgt tak kena dialog dgn mulutnyeowh iye ke.. tapi ketara sangat la, sampai menjejaskan penyampaian jalan citer (bagi aku la). maybe lain kali kena dok seat belakang supaye x ketara sgt kot.
