coz when you jump to far from the conventional, it's gonna be difficult for ppl to adapt. especially when their (nintendo's) competitors are still sticking with the conventional joypads.
As I'm doing interface design, let me give some points about usability from what we currently know and see.
for those who say it's difficult to use, let me compare this with something that everybody, from babies to grandpas use.
the tv remote.
the design is absolutely horrid. it's rectangle, so you don't have any grip. everything that a remote offers defy any usability guide that's available – less buttons, no ergonomics, etc. however, people have learned to accomodate to the design. so absolutely everybody tak takut to pick it up and use it.
try giving your mom the ps2 joystick, and i bet she won't use it. give her something that looks like remote, no wires, simple buttons, and what do you think will she do?
She will ask how to control (even though the d-pad is right in front), which buttons to press (just because of too many buttons), etc.
it's like the ipod. there are tons of other mp3 players out there that has a lot more functionality. and cheaper. however, ipod still sells like goreng pisang. there is a hidden rule (theory? tak ingat), called the rule of seven. it states that the first seven minutes of view and usage of a device will either sell it or not. if you can make the users discover by themselves all of the functionality in seven minutes, they will 100% like it.
also there is one very, VERY big thing about this controller that people don't think about.
it's wireless by default. that in itself is very very important, especially when japanese homes are so small. early adopters of ps2 bought it because it can play dvds. well if anything, i'd say people will get this machine because it's small and so simple and elegant. plus, if the rumoured tons of old nintendo games readily available by the time it launches is true, then this will be another nintendo winner.
very, very exciting indeed
