[I]Up the fringe at NotThatBalai
By IZUAN SHAH
Does all great art belong in the Balai Seni Lukis (National Art Gallery)? Or can it be created anywhere and belong to everyone? This argument comes to a head at the second instalment of the independent festival Notthatbalai.
The art and music festival, which runs daily till this Sunday at the Lost Generation Space in Taman Seputeh, Kuala Lumpur, will highlight visual and performance art, film, new media, poetry and music. Exhibitions, talks and a flea market will also be part of the art parade.
This year’s theme is Kuasa Tinggi, High Voltage and the fest will place emphasis on a stylistic clash and blending of artists from different disciplines and backgrounds.
With daily activities from 2pm to 10pm, Notthatbalai-goers will be surrounded by an array of fringe arts and beyond.
Music collectives like Soundscape Records and the Street Horn Syndicate to solo singer-songwriters like Hassan Peter Brown, Jerome Kugan, Francis Wolf, Kim Peacock and Isthihany “Izzy” Anuar are scheduled on the bill. Rock band Fallen Leaves and Francis Wolf, founder of Spunky Funggy, will also be making appearances.
For the dance element, participants include Dua Space Dance Theatre, Electro Primitive, Nyoba & Dancers, Passe Partout Studio, Indonesian dancer Bebek and Malaysian dancers Saiful Razman, Intan Rafiza and Chong Keat Ann. The Sutra Dance Theatre has invited dancer Rahul Aacharya from India while independent champions of land reclamation for art practitioners, the ALaRm Co-Op (Art Land Reclaim Co-Operative), will also be involved.
Independent films will be screened as well, and this segment will feature over 30 filmmakers including four shorts on the Taman Medan Project. Talks at the festival will be given by animation, film and visual/aural communication veteran Hassan Muthalib, new media speakers Luk Chee Chew and Hasnul Jamal Saidon, video art speakers Ray Langenbach and Wong Hoy Cheong, film speaker Kho Tong Guan and an overall guest speaker Yap Sau Bin from Taiwan.
KOMAS, Wong Siew Lee and Loy Chee Luen meanwhile will conduct workshops on topics like video production, art craft and puppeteering.
This year, the festival’s centrepiece, the visual art exhibition, has been given an “open invitation and selection” policy to build diversity among the participants displaying works. Open invitations were extended to artists of neighbouring countries.
The visual art exhibition showcases works from over 30 individual artists and will continue till Sept 10.
Organisers Lost Generation Space, self-described as “non-profit-seeking volunteers aiming to establish a cultured Malaysian society by promoting and stimulating more alternative art activities”, will call upon Instant Café Theatre director Jo Kukathas to officiate the festival’s opening tomorrow at 8.30pm.
NotThatBalai runs till this Sunday, daily from 2pm to 10pm at the Lost Generation Space, 11, Lorong Permai, off Jln Syed Putra, Robson Heights in Kuala Lumpur. Admission is free. For more info, contact Yeoh (019-6838397) or Tsu (016-9003389), or browse http://www.geocities.com/lostgenspace.
