The ISS series was once acknowledged as the holy grail of football series
during its heydays on SNES and N64. It has then slipped it's popularity
and handed the title to its sister game Pro Evolution Soccer (Winning Eleven).
It tried to make a comeback with ISS 2 but failed due to its poor gameplay,
and ISS 3 is the game to repair back the damage. It was released on PlayStation
2 and GameCube a couple of months back, and this is the first time for the
series to come to the PC platform.
It is almost similar to the PS2 version
in terms of graphics, sound and just about everything. Which goes to the
saying, “If it ain't broke, don't fix it” since the console version is
still a great game by its standards. However, PC is a completely different
medium and the decision to leave almost everything intact results in poor
design that just screams “rehash!”
The main menu
Upon entering the main menu one would immediately notice the lack of proper
keyboard support. The Enter and Escape key seem unrecognisable to the game
as menu selection keys, which virtually all games out there use this setting.
Instead, the game prefers you to use Z as the selection key and X as the
back key. No guide, no indication, nothing. One would expect to be able to
change or do something about this on the options menu. But there is practically
nothing that you can set here! No graphic-quality setting, no sound-enhancement
